High Performance SemiCrystalline PEEK (polyetheretherketone) films are
drawing interest within the industrial marketplace. PEEK has the characteristics
of a versatile high performance film with a high dielectric property,
resistance to chemical corrosion and the ability to withstand higher operating
temperatures. It is one of the most thermally stable thermoplastics out
on the market. The material has a variety of uses and applications
from fabrication of industrial machines, medical and electronic devices,
scientific instruments and chemical processing as well as use in the oil
and gas industries
PEEK Filters
Gateway Laser Services laser micromachines high precision
filters using PEEK film material. Filters which operate in high temperature
or corrosive environments are often fabricated out of PEEK film as the
material of choice. Such filters are often designed as small hole arrays
laser drilled in specific patterns as called for by design. The laser
drilled apertures can be as small as 0.002” with precision levels
of 0.0002” inch. Peek filters laser micromachined
by Gateway Laser Services display excellent edge quality without burring.
Seals & Gaskets
In the fabrication of seals and gaskets, PEEK has become
a material of choice as a high performance polymer for industrial applications. See
the attached photo. This high precision design was laser micromachined
to single micron tolerances.
Biomedical Applications
PEEK films brand Victrex (Adjedium Film Group) high performance
polymer has successfully replaced glass, stainless steel and other materials
used for medical applications. This polymer is extremely inert
for sterile environments and can withstand many autoclave sterilization
cycles. In the biomedical field, PEEK competes with stainless
steel in the use of implants where material strength and toughness prevents
wear and tear inside the body with low potential risk.
Gateway Laser Services can process small, high precision
medical parts requiring tightly controlled dimensional accuracy with features
as small as 50 microns in size on tubular parts or flat stock. In
addition to PEEK material, the following materials are routinely laser processed: metals,
alloys, thin ceramics, adhesives, thin films and foils, polyimide,
delrin, kalrez and graphite materials.
